Obama wants pre-911 “counter terrorism thinking, meaning full-blown civilian trials for all captured terrorists“. President Bill Clinton did the same thing during his tenure, ignoring responses after attacks; though he’ll pop a gasket if you suggest that to him. Considering that Sudanese officials secretly offered the Clinton administration a secret extradition of Osama Bin Laden from Khartoum in 1996, it would seem he didn’t have a full grasp of what faced him. The Administration has denied any offer existed, though the Sudanese have reportedly said otherwise — several times.
After the bomb that was detonated under the World Trade Center in 1993 — killing six, wounding 1,042 — it was given to law enforcement agencies. Little did he, and to some degree all of us, know the degrees in which terrorists were emboldened to plan another attack eight years later. During the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia (think Black Hawk Down) to capture warlord Mohammed Aidid, 19 American soldiers were killed (84 wounded), dragged through the streets on television. The United States, rather than dropping the mighty arm of the greatest military (no, not nukes, just overall picture of our strength), the Administration bails.
A bomb exploded when terrorists drove a truck into the Khobar Towers in Dhahran Saudi Arabia in June of 1996; 19 Americna Air Force personnel were injured and 300 Americans wounded. Later that year, Kabul, Afghanistan was overrun by the Taliban becoming a terrorists haven. An additional 257 people (12 Americans) were killed (5,000 more injured) after bombs destroyed U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. The U.S.S. Cole was attacked in Yeman via a speedboat with explosives killing 17.
All the while Clinton was taking a police enforcement-like response, or none at all, or whining to the incompetent, corrupt, anti-semitic, back-stabbing, oil-for-food scandal making United Nations, rather than responding like we should. Terrorists became emboldened; until George Bush came into office and said, like Tony Soprano, “you wanna fuck with us?”
I’m not blaming Clinton for 9/11. Sorry. But that responsibility has to be given to the terrorist themselves. Americans were ignorant of the possibilities of homeland attacks since 60 years had passed when foreign aggressors attacked us on such wide-scale that changed the course of a single nation, and an entire world. If we learned anything, giving up because we’re financially inconvenienced while brainwashed religious fanatics spend day, money, night and life with a single preoccupation to destroy (or assimilate you), then giving up isn’t the solution.
On another note: This site claims, via Defense Department records, that there were 7,499 military deaths during Clinton’s administration compared to 7,386 of Bush’s administration until June of 2007.
